Speed Training For Wide Receivers Using Mini Hurdles

Accelerate off the ball

Wide receivers require great acceleration coming off the ball and out of breaks.  Fast foot turnover improves the first couple of steps that influence how fast an athlete can get to full speed.  Stride rate or stride frequency is one of the most important factors we look at when training athletes acceleration, mini hurdles are the most effective training tool to get this done.

Footwork

Mini hurdles create “road runner” feet and this is paramount for wide receivers. If a receiver gets jammed at the line, he has to be able to keep his feet and still accelerate. Fast footwork will help keep balance and continue to accelerate down the field.

Think about a stutter and go. A wide receiver has to be able to go from a full sprint to a couple of small steps back into a full sprint. This type of route is directly influenced by mini hurdle training.

Get out of breaks faster

The ability to change directions comes from leg strength, body control, and footwork. Mini Hurdles improve the quick footwork and body control. This coupled with the change of direction drills increases the change of direction agility.

Adding the OverSpeed cable to mini hurdle drills is a great way to increase training intensity, and this is highly recommended for athletes looking for another gear.

You have every day to prepare.
